Petrozavodsk (Russian: Петрозаводск; Karelian, Vepsian and Finnish: Petroskoi; literally meaning the "Peter's Factory") is the capital city of the Republic of Karelia, Russia, which stretches along the western shore of Lake Onega for some 27 kilometers (17 mi). Population: 261,987 (2010 Census); 266,160 (2002 Census); 269,485 (1989 Census).
It was previously known as Shuysky Zavod (1703–1704) and Petrovskaya Sloboda (1704–1777), as well as Äänislinna(Onegaborg) among the Finnish forces during the Continuation War (1941–1944).
