An Olympiad (Greek: Ὀλυμπιάς, Olympiás) is a period of four years associated with the Olympic Games of the Ancient Greeks.

Although the Ancient Olympic Games were established during Archaic Greece, it was not until the Hellenistic period, beginning with Ephorus, that the Olympiad was used as a calendar epoch. Converting to the modern BC/AD dating system, the first Olympiad began in the summer of 776 BC and lasted until the summer of 772 BC, when the second Olympiad would begin with the commencement of the next games.

Meteorological Service of New Zealand Limited (MetService - Te Ratonga Tirorangi) was established as a state-owned enterprise in 1992. It employs about 300 staff and its headquarters are in Wellington, New Zealand. Prior to becoming an SOE, New Zealand's national meteorological service has existed in a number of forms since the appointment of the country's first Director of Meteorological Stations in August 1861.

The New Zealand Mathematical Society is a New Zealand based learned society of mathematicians. It is listed by the Royal Society of New Zealand as the affiliate organisation responsible for mathematics research, and by the International Mathematical Union as the national mathematical society of its country. The total membership in the society has varied from approximately 100 soon after its 1974 foundation to between 200 and 300 at its 25th anniversary in 1999.

The NZMS has its origins in the annual New Zealand Mathematics Colloquium, held beginning in 1966, and in a 1967 visit to New Zealand by Bernhard Neumann during which he promoted connections between the New Zealand and Australian mathematics communities. A drafting committee for the new society was formed at the 1973 colloquium, despite some opposition from the RSNZ's National Committee for Mathematics, and the society was founded in 1974 with David Vere-Jones as founding president.

The society publishes the Newsletter of the New Zealand Mathematical Society three times a year, and co-sponsors the New Zealand Journal of Mathematics (ISSN 1179-4984) with the Department of Mathematics of the University of Auckland. The journal was given its name and co-sponsorship in 1992, and is the successor to a previous publication founded in 1969, the Mathematical Chronicle of the University of Auckland.

Other activities of the society include hosting student competitions, visiting lecturers, and colloquium speakers, and providing travel grants for New Zealand students and mathematicians to attend conferences. A small number of distinguished mathematicians with ties to New Zealand have been named as Honorary Life Members of the society, including Henry Forder, Vaughan Jones, and Bernhard Neumann.

The New Zealand Law Society is the parent body for barristers and solicitors in New Zealand. It was established in 1869, and regulates all lawyers practising in New Zealand. Membership of the Society is voluntary, although any person wishing to practice law in New Zealand must obtain a practising certificate from the Society. The Society has 13 branch offices throughout the country. Each branch has a president and a council, which represent their members’ interests on a regional and national level.

The New Zealand Medical Association (NZMA) is an association representing some doctors and medical students in New Zealand. It was officially founded after a meeting in April 1886 at Dunedin Hospital. From 1896 to 1967, the NZMA was considered as a branch of the British Medical Association and was known as the New Zealand Branch of the British Medical Association well into the 1970s. In the 1960s, Erich Geiringer, who was in conflict with the association, exploited the potential for confusion by founding the New Zealand Medical Association (since this name was officially free). Geiringer's NZMA included a number of progressive physicians and was very involved in political debates.

The NZMA is part of the World Medical Association and publishes The New Zealand Medical Journal.

An out-of-place artifact (OOPArt) is an artifact of historical, archaeological, or paleontological interest found in an unusual context, which challenges conventional historical chronology by its presence in that context. Such artifacts may appear "too advanced" for the technology known to have existed at the time, or may suggest human presence at a time before humans are known to have existed. Other examples may suggest contact between different cultures that is hard to account for with conventional historical understanding.

The term is used in fringe science such as cryptozoology, as well as by proponents of ancient astronaut theories, young Earth creationists, and paranormal enthusiasts. It can describe a wide variety of objects, from anomalies studied by mainstream science to pseudoarchaeology to objects that have been shown to be hoaxes or to have mundane explanations.

Critics argue that most purported OOPArts which are not hoaxes are the result of mistaken interpretation and wishful thinking, such as a mistaken belief that a particular culture could not have created an artifact or technology due to a lack of knowledge or materials. In some cases, the uncertainty results from inaccurate descriptions. For example, the cuboid Wolfsegg Iron is not really a perfect cube, nor are the Klerksdorp spheres actual perfect spheres. The Iron pillar of Delhi was said to be "rust proof", but it has some rust near its base; its relative resistance to corrosion is due to slag inclusions left over from the manufacturing conditions and environmental factors.

Supporters regard OOPArts as evidence that mainstream science is overlooking huge areas of knowledge, either willfully or through ignorance. Many writers or researchers who question conventional views of human history have used purported OOPArts in attempts to bolster their arguments. Creation science often relies on allegedly anomalous finds in the archaeological record to challenge scientific chronologies and models of human evolution. Claimed OOPArts have been used to support religious descriptions of prehistory, ancient astronaut theories, and the notion of vanished civilizations that possessed knowledge or technology more advanced than that known in modern times.
