University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center (UM BWMC) is a hospital in Glen Burnie, Maryland that is part of the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS). This hospital opened as North Arundel Hospital in 1965 with three floors and limited acute care services. Hereditary motor and sensory neuropathies (HMSN) is a name sometimes given to a group of different neuropathies which are all characterized by their impact upon both afferent and efferent neural communication. HMSN are characterised by atypical neural development and degradation of neural tissue. The two common forms of HMSN are either hypertrophic demyelinated nerves or complete atrophy of neural tissue. Hypertrophic condition causes neural stiffness and a demyelination of nerves in the peripheral nervous system, and atrophy causes the breakdown of axons and neural cell bodies. In these disorders, a patient experiences progressive muscle atrophy and sensory neuropathy of the extremities.

The term "hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy" was used mostly historically to denote the more common forms Charcot–Marie–Tooth disease (CMT). With the identification of a wide number of genetically and phenotypically distinct forms of CMT, the term HMSN is now used less frequently.

Fibrinolysin is an enzyme derived from plasma of bovine origin (plasmin) or extracted from cultures of certain bacteria. It is used locally only and exclusively together with the enzyme desoxyribonuclease (extracted from bovine pancreas). Fibrinolysin and desoxyribonuclease both act as lytic enzymes. The combination is available as ointment containing 1 BU (Biological Unit) fibrinolysin and 666 BUs desoxyribonuclease per gram.

Fibrinolysin attacks and inactivates fibrin molecules occurring in undesirable exudates on the surface of the human body and on human mucosa, e.g., in superficial wounds and burns, while desoxyribonuclease targets and destroys (human) DNA. The combination of the two enzymes has a synergistic effect on necrotic but not on living tissue. According to the manufacturer the ointment provides enhanced wound cleaning and accelerates the healing process.

Both enzymes are marginally resorbed into systemic circulation because of their very high molecular weight and their macromolecular structure.

The activity of both enzymes is almost completely exhausted after 24 hours. Usually, it is necessary to repeat the application (and renew the dressing) every 6 to 8 hours until healing becomes complete.

The ointment is marketed by Pfizer under the brand name Fibrolan in a variety of countries (e.g. Switzerland). It is currently not approved in the USA.

Where approved, Fibrolan has been licensed on the basis of claimed good therapeutical experience, but adequate and well controlled studies are still lacking.

In the past, combinations with the antibiotic chloramphenicol were available, but because chloramphenicol in any form of application has led to aplastic anemia and death, these were banned. Additionally, combinations with the antifibrinolytic agent tranexamic acid have been withdrawn from pharmaceutic markets.

NHS Health Scotland was the Scottish national health education and promotion agency. A Special Health Board of NHS Scotland, its goal was to improve the health of the nation, via research, planning, programme implementation and evaluation.

The Helen DeVos Children's Hospital (HDCH) is a nationally ranked, freestanding, 241-bed, pediatric acute care children's hospital located in downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan. It is affiliated with the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine and is a member of the Spectrum health system, the only children's hospital in the system. The hospital provides comprehensive pediatric specialties and subspecialties to infants, children, teens, and young adults aged 0–21 throughout Grand Rapids region and features an ACS verified level I pediatric trauma center. Its regional pediatric intensive-care unit and neonatal intensive care units serve the region. It is named for Helen DeVos, wife of Amway founder Richard DeVos, a major donor.

The Karachi Institute of Heart Diseases (KIHD), is located in Karachi, became functional on June 3, 2005. It is the second cardiac care facility of the metropolis after the National Institute of Cardio Vascular Diseases (NICVD). The institute, having 120 beds, would initially have an outpatient department (OPD), besides three laboratories and several diagnostic equipment for Electro-Cardio Gram (ECG), X-Rays, Exercise Tolerance Test (ETT), Echo Doppler studies, angiography, cardiac catheterization and angioplasty.

As compared to the other hospitals of the city, the KIHD will be charging considerably less for the facilities provided and the tests carried out there. For instance, a patient having angiography at the new institute would be charged only PKR 3,000, as compared to about PKR 10,000 at the NICVD and PKR 25,000 at the private ones.

Similarly, those having angioplasty at the KIHD would be charged PKR 35,000 in case of one stent and PKR 50,000 for double stents. A patient is charged at least PKR 125,000 for single-stent angioplasty in other hospitals.

As far as OPD charges are concerned it would be only PKR 100 (with ECG), while echo-cardiography and ETT tests would be conducted for PKR 300 each. Already, one angioplasty and three angiography cases have been performed at the institute.

Spread out over an area of 3.6 acres (15,000 m2), the KIHD is located on the old campus of Karachi Medical and Dental College in Federal B Area’s block 16. It is the same place where a maternity home was inaugurated by Begum Nusrat Bhutto in 1974. The maternity home was later turned into an educational institution.

The institute, which would shortly be equipped with a thallium scanning unit, would be providing teaching/training facilities to the under- and postgraduate trainees, for which it would be affiliated with Karachi University as well as the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Pakistan.

The City District Government Karachi (CDGK), had spent about PKR 800 million on the project, adding that the amount was used for renovation of the old building and purchase of the required equipment.

The Hospital Universitario La Paz, HULP, is a general tertiary hospital situated in the neighbourhood that takes is name from the hospital in the northern city district of Fuencarral-El Pardo in the city of Madrid in Spain. It is affiliated to the Madrid Regional Health Care System (Servicio Madrileño de Salud-SERMAS) a branch of the Commonwealth of Madrid (the autonomous region's executive administration).

The hospital opened in July 1964, being at that time the first modern hospital centre in the country. It was named to "celebrate" the 25 years of so-called francoist peace after the Spanish Civil War. Nevertheless, the name has caught the citizens' mind and there are no significant movements to re-brand it in accordance with the Historical Memory Law that formally bans any public honour to the Franco regime. Today, it remains one of the largest hospital in Madrid by number of in-patients (it serves a population in excess of 500000 people) and one of the biggest of Spain from the number of beds.
